Over 60,000 years ago this district was peopled by the Burramattagal, a clan of the Darug first nations peoples. It is thought that Burramattagal means the place where ells lie down to breed. Parramatta is the second European settlement in Australia. The site was chosen by Governor Phillip on 24th April 1788 and named Rose Hill. It was renamed Parramatta in 1791.
